Flower, Night Bloom

Posted by Justin Haaheim (New Haven, CT, United States) on 25 March 2007 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

A plant at my friends house that remains flowerless for all but one night of the year. During that one night, supposedly, a single flower blooms and remains open until the morning, when it closes and dies. My friend and I only caught this one night when it blooms because he noticed the perfume the flower lets off just before he headed to bed.

I have one of these plants in my convervatory, i've been trying to find out what it's name is and where it comes from for a long while. My plant has been flowering every month throughout the summer with several flowers each time. the flowers take about a month to grow and usually open around the date of our full moon.
Now the weather has turned cold it has stop producing flowers.
Please could you email my if you have anymore information on this plant.

I have one of these plants. And I wait and wait for this gorgeous flower to open. Can anyone tell me its name and what are the best conditions for this plant to prolificate . I am simply mad about this fragrant flower.

Datura innoxia. Blooms range from 2 inches to 7 inches wide depending on the exact species you have. HIGHLY TOXIC. Can kill a child and used to be used in South Pacific to make husbands sick when wife's didn't want sex. NO lie absolutely true. Stronger if you wanted them totally dead.

the Flower is Called Epiphyllum, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epiphyllum.
My mom has the same ones, they bloom for one night only, and they die by sunrise. I do not believe they are dangerous at all, they are just beautifull.
